The Route 28 corridor through Somerville is very attractive for economic development and has been characterized as “a unique opportunity to transform the existing post-industrial landscape that surrounds it into a visual and functional continuum of urban space with human scale.” This study, conducted in consultation with a study advisory committee, provides the conceptual and informational groundwork for carrying out the future development of the Route 28 corridor. The nature of this preparation allows for flexibility in its possible application. Staff evaluated the concerns of the corridor’s stakeholders; collected and summarized socioeconomic data; reviewed existing transportation-planning studies and development studies; conducted an origin-destination travel study; hosted an urban design workshop; and studied bicycle and pedestrian access along the corridor.
