As bicycling and bike lanes have proliferated in the Boston metropolitan region, so too have incidences of bicycle lanes being obstructed by people parking motor vehicles. This memo presents the findings of a literature review and case studies from across North America in which MPO staff researched the sources of bike lane obstruction, its impact on people using bike lanes, and interventions that municipalities can utilize to prevent it. These interventions cover three approaches: design, enforcement, and policy. Finally, select interventions are recommended for implementation by municipalities or the Boston Region MPO.
